It’s a bit difficult to fully comprehend by just a few notes here, and to give exact savings figures, but here are the stats from the year of 2 x EV motoring, and our solar & battery setup:
- 3543 kWh generated by solar
- 5775 kWh imported from the grid
- 286 kWh exported to the grid
So, in total, we consumed 9032 kWh of electricity from the grid and solar sources in the last 12 months.
If we paid the current approx. rate for electricity, we consumed at 0.30 per kWh our bill would have been circa £2,709.6 (excluding Standing Charges)
However, as we have an EV, solar, and Batteries, we’ve only paid £514.84 since July 2021 (lets allocated that to 40% for driving & 60% house consumption… that’s £205.93 (that’s 0.0147 p per mile)
A combination of free energy from solar and our lower EV rate tariff has made a significant difference. (4.5p per kwh until April 2022, then increased to 8.25p per kWh for a 5-hour slot)
If we had no EV, figures would obviously be different as our consumption would be about 60% the amount but we’d not be eligible for the lower EV tariff.
I’m estimating EV driving of circa 14000 miles. At 4 miles per kWh, that’s 3500kWh of energy used for driving.
14,000 miles of previous car driving at 45mpg at today’s cost at £1.80 per litre = £2,545.81 in fuel cost savings.
NOTES:
So… if no solar or EV, our energy cost of running the house would be £1,625 per year at the new tariffs.
Our solar system cost was circa £12,000, but we had to enhance the system due to shading with specialist inverters, etc. (typical cost for the similar system without extras last year would have been circa 10k and due to shading we do lose about 23% of our potential solar generation.)
I have excluded any public charging as this only happened about 3 times in the last 12 months.
Both cars are leased but it is our intention to consider purchasing these cars at the end of the lease as we are so impressed with them. We usually lease our cars for 3-4 yrs., and the cost of the lease of an EV v’s an ICE version is probably about 20-30% higher in lease costs depending on the vehicle (approx.)
Our house batteries are guaranteed with an unlimited cycle charge for 10 years. & The Feed In Tariff is 4.1p a kwh
Standing Charges for energy have not been taken into consideration here.
